Will Bay Ridge Brooklyn be the next Foodie Scene?

When you are into food and live in NYC its always good to know where you haven't explored, where food politics are changing, and how to make your own community more accountable to offering delicious affordable meals. SLPS members love a potluck, love their food cheap and love variety. So, where is the next place to find a cheap meal....Bay Ridge, Brooklyn may be a NORC (a naturally occurring retirement community), but this won't stop its food scene from growing. Tanoreen, Lesky's Bakery, and t… Continue

We are the FOOD stories we Tell.

It is often said that we are the stories we tell. The more I live and eat in Brooklyn I believe we are the Food Stories we tell. In my own circle of friends we often share new recipes, what the dinner menu is this week, a new restaurant eaten at, what the new favorite food is, recommendations on how to improve eating, we make plans to have dinner together, share desserts and talk about how our families celebrate the holiday's with food. With my family, I get advice on how to improve my cooking,… Continue

NYC: SLIDELUCK POTSHOW XIII - EAT, SHARE, WATCH

If you missed SLPS in NYC then you missed a great view, amazing art, delicious food and good drinks. While the balcony kept the grill open til late with sausages, hot dogs and burgers, DJ Moni kept the mood while new and old SLPS members brought in food to share. And if you came late you could still get some popcorn from the popcorn machine. A table for appetizers, vegetarians, meat lovers and sugar cravers made the snacking possible all night. Savory, Generous, Good & Spicy, Hodge Podge,… Continue

WHY WE EAT

The last photo in the Travel Section of The NY Times is titled "Why we Travel." The photo captures a traveler explaining where they are and the purpose for their travels. I have noticed that this photo rarely includes a traveler with food or engaging in any culinary delight. Yet I would argue that in most of our experiences, whether in our own community, own country or even when traveling it is food that defines our moments. It is food that opens us up socially, encourages us to interact, to ha… Continue

Cheap Eats for a Potluck - Bring the Lower East Side

A fellow SLPS friend and I met up on the LES yesterday - and of course we ended up eating. Within a short walk our bags were full with pickles, bialys and donuts. This had me thinking: What do you bring to a potluck if you can't cook? How can you keep the budget under $10, but still make an impact on the potluck? This is to encourage those of you who hate cooking and baking to still go to a potluck, just bring what you love and bring what you know. Bring your neighborhood, bring the places y… Continue
